Bulgaria remains a net exporter of electricity and one of the pillars of the energy system in Southeast Europe. In 2024, electricity exports exceeded imports by 3.1 %. By this measure the country ranks 11th in Europe. Among the Balkan countries, only Slovenia (-19 %) and Montenegro (-5.6 %) performed better. Romania, Albania, Serbia and North Macedonia are net importers. The largest export volumes in Europe were by Sweden (-27 %) and France (-22 %).
In absolute terms, Bulgaria exported 987 GWh. Among Balkan countries, only Slovenia surpasses it with 2,406 GWh. Turkey and Greece exported 985 GWh and 307 GWh respectively. Romania imported 2,958 GWh, North Macedonia 710 GWh, Serbia 520 GWh, Albania 334 GWh.
Energy Minister Zhecho Stankov stated that in 2025 electricity exports will increase by 60 % compared to 2024.
